The Gaggia Baby Twin is the top of the range espresso machine in Gaggia's 'semi-automatic' range. It's based on the popular Baby machine, but is called the 'Twin' as it has two boilers: one for brewing coffee and a thermoblock for steaming milk. So when you're making a cappuccino or latte, there's no waiting time between brewing and steaming. You can do one straight after the other.

The Baby Twin also has a dosing system. It has two programmable buttons which can be set to dispense two different volumes of water. So you can have one set up for a single shot and the other for a double. Once the specified volume of water has been used, the pump automatically turns itself off. But if you like to stay in control, there's also a separate 'manual' button for controlling the pump.

Ground Coffee & Coffee Pods
Ground coffee & ESE pods

The Gaggia Baby Twin can be used with either ground coffee or E.S.E. coffee pods. It comes with two pressurised "crema perfetta" filter baskets, one single which doubles as an E.S.E. basket, and a double. Pressurised baskets put the espresso beverage under additional pressure after coming into contact with the coffee to guarantee a crema.

As we at Galla Coffee aren't big fans of pressurised baskets - they produce a less intense espresso that's missing some delicate flavours - we have added two standard filter baskets for free. So you can experiment for yourself and see which set of baskets you prefer.

Dual Boiler
dual boiler

To brew espresso you need water around 95°C, but to steam milk you need water around 120°C. This is a problem on single boiler machines as when switching between brewing and steaming you have to wait for the boiler to either rise or fall in temperature. The Baby Twin solves this problem by having two boilers. It has the standard boiler dedicated to brewing coffee and a thermoblock for steaming. So you can start one immediately after finishing the other.

Dosing System

The Baby Twin has two extra buttons, one setup for automatically dosing a single shot and the other for a double. Simply press the button once to start brewing and after a set volume of water has been dispensed the pump automatically switches itself off. Both buttons are programmable, so you can change the volume of water dispensed to suit your taste. The single button also has a pre-infusion setting.

Chrome Plated Brass Grouphead and Portafilter
Brass grouphead and portafilter

The Gaggia Baby Twin uses commercial grade chrome plated brass for the grouphead and portafilter to ensure even heating and to improve heat retention. The portafilter itself is one of the heaviest on the market, weighing in at nearly 500g! It's 58mm in diameter, like most commercial machines, to allow for a more even extraction from the ground coffee.

Solenoid Valve
solenoid valve

This is a special valve which removes excess pressure above the portafilter immediately after the espresso is brewed. This has two advantages: firstly it stops the portafilter from dripping once you switch off the pump; secondly it prevents a "portafilter sneeze", where this excess pressure can cause hot, wet grounds to spray everywhere, should you remove the portafilter too soon after brewing.

Panarello Steamer Attachment

Panarello steamer attachment rotates for easy access to froth milk in seconds. It also delivers hot water for tea and other hot drinks.
