The word espresso is believed to come from the Italian term 'espressamente', which translates as 'expressly for you', and is applied to food or drink that is made at the moment of asking. Nowadays, espresso loosely refers to a drink made by subjecting coffee grounds to pressurised water.
Initially Espresso makers were designed to make coffee quickly, but it soon became apparent that brewing coffee under pressure releases delicate flavours which would not otherwise be present.
